Angelos Angelidis is a greek artist based in Athens. After a 6 year career as a flying trapeze artist in circuses around the world, and 15 years as a professional film and documentary editor based in Paris, he decided to return to Athens and focus on sculpture and jewellery. His jewellery work consists of geometrical structures made with a variety of metal plates and wires and is exposed in museum and gallery shops in Greece and abroad.
“ The cube is a shape that has marked me since my childhood.
To my perception the cube is a body so complete that it has lost its ability to evolve and therefore has come to an eternal stillness. Through my constructions, I seek to give life back to the cube in order for it to regain movement, lightness and expression.
The cube also represents for me the three-dimensional form of a pixel, a reference to the existence of the digital world in our physical one. My jewellery when worn gives the impression of the human body being encircled and penetrated by waves of 3D pixels.
Through these structures I try to express the question whether we humans do actually have full control of the digital world, or is it the digital world that controls us to our expense.
A direct reference deriving from the above is that of the half-human/half-machine living body as the jewellery pieces are projections of the body extremities and therefore they are the ones that create all first contact with the outside world, controlling our interference with it.
It is a project that started after the lockdown era of the corona virus pandemic and I believe it reflects the struggle of liberation from today's society of limitation, conformity and ultimately petrification. “
